Welding protection curtain

The soft PVC slats safely shield welding workplaces against UV light, infrared radiation, slag spatter and flying sparks. However, a welding protection curtain must not be used to observe the welding process as a substitute for a welding shield.

The highest requirements are placed on the quality of protective curtains. They may only be produced and sold if they are tested and regularly monitored by an external institute in accordance with the German Industrial Standard (DIN).

JEDI Kunststofftechnik GmbH works closely with the DINCERTCO test laboratory. The laboratory tests every welding protection curtain on the basis of DIN EN ISO 25980:2015-01 (eye protection category I) and issues a certificate valid for 5 years. In addition, a works inspection is carried out to assess a functioning quality-management system. At regular intervals the quality of the welding protection products is confirmed by DINCERTCO, and the certified types/models are published online in the DINCERTCO database.

During certification testing, particular attention is paid to:

Transmittance

In relation to the spectral distribution of CIE standard illuminant A according to ISO 4007, the luminous transmittance τ must be greater than 1×10⁻⁶. Stray light scattered within 1° of the direction of incidence of the radiation must be captured in the measurement. The spectral transmittance must be less than 2×10⁻⁵ in the wavelength range between 210 nm and 313 nm, and less than 3×10⁻² between 313 nm and 400 nm. In the range from 400 nm to 1,400 nm the hazard level G must be less than 1.

Reflectance

When measured with an integrating (Ulbricht) sphere, the spectral reflectance between 230 nm and 400 nm must be less than 10 %, and the luminous reflectance less than 10 % (relative to the spectral distribution of CIE standard illuminant A according to ISO 11664-2).

UV stability

The relative change in luminous transmittance resulting from the test according to EN 168 must not be greater than ±20 %. Exceeding this is permissible provided that it does not thereby reach or exceed the hazard level G of 1 according to 4.2.

Flammability

After 15 s the burner must be removed, and by observation it must be established whether the flame extinguishes by itself and the material stops glowing within (3) s. It must then be verified by inspection whether the flame burn has reached the test mark 150 mm above the lower end of the specimen according to 4.5.6.

Marking

To identify welding curtains, strips and screens and to enable their intended use, they must be permanently marked. The marking must be clearly visible, with letters at least 10 mm high. It consists of the number of this International Standard (i.e. ISO 25980), the certification mark (where applicable), the name or trademark of the manufacturer, distributor or importer, and the month and year of manufacture.
